For 2024-2025, we offered three free sports clubs for Autumn & Spring; Netball Club for Y4, 5 & 6, Dodgeball for Y5/6 and a KS 1Sports Club. In the Summer Term, we have a Netball Club plus a Y1 to Y6 Athletics Club.

The Government would like us to report on children in Y6 who can swim, but there is not actually any direct ring-fenced ‘this is for swimming’. After COVID, when no one had been anywhere and children’s swimming lessons were the last thing on anyone’s mind, I made the decision, with the agreement of the GB, that we would totally fund from school budget Y4, Y5 & Y6 swimming, so every child would have 10 lessons a year for 3 years. For our school, learning to swim is as important as learning to read!! We fund our swimming from a mixture of PPG, School Budget and Sports Premium, the argument being that taking Y4s was the school’s historical previous provision, Y5&Y6 is our extra provision, but we take everyone not just those who cannot swim the magical 25m that the Government requires as we see that swimming is a great life skill as well as fitness and fun, and that children can keep improving their strokes, stamina and life-saving skills, it doesn’t have to stop at 25m!

At the beginning of each term of swimming, we always send out a letter to parents to confirm children’s level of swimming ability; from not being water confident/never been in a swimming pool, needs armbands, can swim a few strokes, can swim a width to can swim 25m and also the option of adding any swim awards if their child has attended swimming lessons. Increasingly, we are having more children who have not experienced a swimming pool and more children who are not having the opportunity to go to swimming lessons. So, we see our three-year cycle of swimming lessons as incredibly important.

Summary of our termly swimming from Summer 2024 to Spring 2026

Spring 2026: These Y5s swam in Summer 2025 as Y4s, where 18 children achieved swims of 25m to 100m. Of these, 11 children achieved 25m and 3 achieved 50m.

Autumn 2025: Our current Y6, of whom 6 could swim a passable front crawl for 25m in Y4, we now have 24 swimming 25m+, a variety of strokes plus water safety and life-saving elements. Of the 6 who are not ‘swimmers’, 2 children have only just joined us and for the other 4, swimming/water/pools are not part of their family scene/experience/cost.

Summer 2025: This is our Y4s first set of swimming lessons. 12 parents indicated that their child could swim 25m, after the initial swim assessment, there were just 6 children who had the stamina/stroke efficiency to do this. We had 12 children who were in the beginners group, with 6 of those with very little or no swimming pool experience and/or water confidence. At the end of this set of 10 lessons, we had 18 children swimming 25m.

Spring 2025: This Y5 swam as Y4s in the Summer 2024. At the end of Spring 2025 sessions, we had 20 (14 more than as Y4) children who swam 25m with 4 children swimming over 200m and completed water safety and self-rescue awards.

Autumn 2024: Our Y6’s started the last round of swimming lessons. As Year 4s this group of children had 4 children who, at the beginning, could swim 25m. At the end of Y6, we had 24 children who could swim 25m or more and completed water safety and self-rescue awards.

Summer 2024: Our Y4’s start at Colchester Leisure World for their first set of 10 swimming lessons. Our initial data indicated that there should be 14 who could swim 25m. However, after the initial swim assessment, we recognised that only 6 children had stamina and proficient front crawl stroke to swim 25m. We had 10 children who either had no pool experience or no water confidence or a few kicks with floatation aids. At the end of the 10 weeks, we had 14 children who achieved 25m.
