At Old Heath we
want to help you help your children in any way that we can. In
order to make that easier, in this section of the website you will
find a number of documents and resources.
We teach the children how to read at Old Heath using a synthetic
phonics system that is called Read Write Inc. The children start by
learning their letter sounds and then blending them into simple
words. As the children progress they read books that contain only
the sounds that they have already learnt. In this way, we hope that
all children feel that they have been successful and are motivated
to carry on reading. The presentation in the read write inc section
contains sound files for you to hear and practice the individual
sounds with your children and we hope it gives you a window into
the way in which we teach your children.
Maths is an area of constant change, and the teaching of how to use
the four operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) is no
exception. So that you can understand how your child is
progressing, as well as showing you how we teach the different
skills, you will find a series of links to the left that illustrate
the different stages in each of the four operations. Your child’s
teacher will know which stage your child is at and with this
knowledge you can get a better understanding of what they can do
and how they will move on. We would urge you to work with the
current levels of the child, as moving children too quickly through
the stages can lead to important gaps in their understanding at a
later date.
At the end of last year's report comment sheets many parents/carers
asked for an explanation of the level system that we use within the
National Curriculum and how this relates to their child's
attainment. We have therefore developed a page on our website
explaining this in great detail. It can be accessed through the
‘Assessment levels’ link in the menu on the left of this
page.
If you have any queries about the materials here, please speak to
your child’s class teacher.
